To another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. I Corinthians 12:10
The gift of tongues is one of the most misunderstood of all the gifts because of the mysterious language that can only be understood through divine interpretation. One of the first manifestations of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the first assembly of saints in Jerusalem in the upper room, God used to save 3000 people. The supernatural gift was used to speak to people in their own language thus allowing them to hear the gospel and be born again.
As with all the gifts there is not a lot of instruction on how to use them except by faith in God to lead you in their employment, but tongues are as important as any of the gifts given to the body of Christ. The apostle Paul instructed the Corinthian church in their use by saying that tongues are a sign, not to believers, but to unbelievers just as they were used in Jerusalem when the 3000 were saved. There is a gift of tongues to be operated in the body when assembled, and there is a prayer language that everyone can have in which we communicate with the Father. There is also a supernatural employment to be used in specific situations orchestrated by the Holy Spirit in which to bring about a sign, miracle or wonder in a person's life.
When the gift is used in the body I have seen great manifestations of power and healing and when there is an interpreter people are astonished by the prophetic revelation of wisdom and knowledge that the Spirit of God bestows, and the entire assembly receives edification, and a sense that God's presence is among them, reinforcing their faith and belief in the supernatural.
But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. I Corinthians 12:11
