The River of Life

And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse, but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it, and His servants shall serve Him. Revelation 22:1-3

The river of life is the anointing that flows out from the very throne of God to His people, without it there is death and desolation. The river makes that which is dead come alive and makes that which is alive have even more life. Jesus promised His followers abundant life and as they stepped out in faith and trusted Him they received the the river flowing into their lives.

In the natural world we see rivers flowing through desolate areas of the world and all around and on either side there is abundant life everywhere because of the constant flow of water. The Nile river is a prime example of what water can do in the desert, without this precious commodity everything would simply dry up.

So it is with us, when the water is not flowing we suffer spiritual dehydration and we began to die or dry up. Many things can stop the flow of a natural river and in the spiritual sense many things can stop the flow in our lives. Unforgiveness, lust, pride, greed and just the everyday worries of the world will make us dry up in our spirits.

When water begins to divert from the main stream it forms off to the side what is called an eddy or whirlpool. The water swirls around until it finally stops and becomes stagnant, many in the body of Christ have become stagnant in their spiritual walk because they have allowed the flow of life to be blocked or dammed up by something.

We as Christians cannot live without the lifeline of the Holy Spirit that ties us to God and gives us spiritual nourishment. If you only ate once a week, you would become very weak and eventually die from starvation. I can't tell you how many people I have seen attending meetings and services that are spiritually dead, with no life signs whatsoever. You can tell someone is dead because nothing is flowing out of his heart to give you life. Are you dead in spirit? Do you want to be renewed and have that abundant life flow out of your heart to give life to others, do you want to be a garden of God or a desert?

If you desire the abundant life that Jesus promised then you have to go to the source or mouth of the river, the throne of God. Come into that quiet place and ask God to remove all the obstacles and dams in your heart that block the flow. Forgive all that have hurt you and release them into God's hands and begin to feel the freedom that will come to release you from the bondage that you have placed yourself in. Then ask God to send a mighty rushing river directly into your heart and fill you with His holy presence and your life will change instantly into a beautiful garden of life.

Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life. John 4: 14
