And take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17
The word of the living God is a powerful weapon in the hands of the believer, but one must be trained in its use in order to defeat an enemy who also uses it against us! When Jesus began His ministry and was tempted by the devil in the wilderness He used it against his schemes and defeated him, but not without a fight.
When Satan tempted Jesus to turn stones into bread, Jesus said to him, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.' " The first couple of times this worked, but then the devil tried to turn the tables (no pun intended) on Jesus by using the sword against Him. Satan took Jesus up to Jerusalem to the highest point on the pinnacle of the temple and said to Him, "If you are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. "For it is written: 'He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you,' "and, 'In their hands they shall bear you up.' "
As you can see, this became a sword fight between the two most powerful beings in the universe, and an example for us to follow in our quest to defeat the powers of darkness. Just as one is trained in battle in the military, so we too are to be trained for spiritual warfare showing ourselves approved to God, rightly dividing the word of truth.
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper then any two edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Hebrews 4:12
