For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; It is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8,9
Jesus was led to the cross to die for mankind and make a way for them to receive eternal life. There were also two thieves, one on one side and one on the other. Then one of the criminals who were hanged said to Jesus, "If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us." But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, "Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation?"
Then the thief said to the other, "We indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong." Then he said to Jesus, "Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom." Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
Then about the sixth hour there was darkness over all the earth, then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, "Father, into Your hands I commit My Spirit." Having said this, He breathed His last.
And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience. Ephesians 2:1,2
NOT OF WORKS
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ. Ephesians 2:4,5
All of a sudden, the former thief was standing at the gates of Heaven all by himself and no one was there to greet him. So, he rang the bell, and an angel appeared and said to him, who are you and how did you get here?
Well, the last thing I remember I was nailed to a cross and the Man on the middle cross said I could come in. Did you read about Heaven in your Bible? What's a Bible? Did you pray the sinner's prayer, no. Were you baptized? No, I was nailed to a cross! Well did you keep the law of Moses? No, who's Moses?
As you can see the former thief didn't have any works and didn't know anything about the word of God or the God of the Bible! Keep in mind most sinners don't know anything either and there are very few things necessary for salvation!
But now in Christ Jesus, you who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:13
WHO CAN BE SAVED?
But what does it say? "The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart" that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:8,9
So, how did the thief get saved? First of all, he acknowledged that he and the other thief were worthy of their punishment, something that needs to be done, acknowledge you are a sinner. Next, he believed Jesus was Lord and King by calling Him Lord and acknowledging the fact that He had a kingdom!
That's all he did! Unbelievable? There are literally thousands if not millions of books, tracts, doctrines, and all manner of religious works trying to explain how to get saved! The thief made it sound too simple, but the gospel is simple, "Saved by grace through faith!" The thief acknowledged he was a sinner, confessed Jesus as Lord, and believed He was King and had a kingdom called Paradise!
The night I was saved 45 years ago a man came to my house with a dispensational chart explaining everything that happened in the Bible from Genesis to Revelation, most of which I didn't understand or know anything about! Then he said to me, "Do you believe God will save you? "Yes!" Simple enough?
"Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved." Romans 10:13 AMEN!
