These six things the Lord Hates, yes, seven are an abomination to Him: a lying tongue. Proverbs 6:16,17
God hates lying and it is an abomination to Him. In His word in many scriptures He displays His disapproval of liars even naming Satan the father of lies. People lie to cover up the truth being tempted to take what they think is an easy way out of a situation when in fact lying about it always complicates the matter and in the end makes it more difficult to escape the consequences of their lies.
In the book of Acts, two people, Ananias and his wife, Sapphira sold some property as everyone else was also doing to support those who needed assistance and they kept back part of the proceeds for themselves and lied to the apostles about their donation. The property was theirs and they could have kept it all, no one was making them sell their land, but they lied and said that their gift was all the price they had received, keeping some for themselves. When Peter confronted Ananias about the matter he lied to him and immediately fell dead at his feet. Three hours later his wife came in and Peter also confronted her and she also lied and dropped dead and was taken out and buried with her husband.
It is a grievous thing to lie to the Holy Spirit and the consequences can sometimes hold a death sentence for those who choose to lie instead of telling the truth. God knows our hearts and minds, even our thoughts, and Jesus said that the truth would set us free. We would do well to take to heart the story of Ananias and his wife, Sapphira and repent of lying to the Holy Spirit and to anyone else for that matter so that we can also walk in the light of the truth as Jesus does.
Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight. Proverbs 12:22
