"Blessed are you Simon Barjonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in Heaven. "And I say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it." Matthew 16:17,18
Peter had just received a revelation directly from the throne of God that Jesus was the Christ, the "Anointed One" and Jesus said that on this rock He would build His church, but the rock He was talking about was the revelation of His word, not Peter, whose name means little pebble.
Man has a tendency to want to worship or elevate man instead of the Lord Jesus Christ to whom all glory and honor belong, and it was no different with Peter, for he is known as the first Pope. Just a common fisherman, Peter was sold out for Jesus becoming the leader of this rag-tag band of brothers who would later be called apostles. These eleven men turned the world upside down preaching the gospel and making disciples, they all eventually gave up their lives and died as martyrs except John, who was boiled in oil and exiled on the isle of Patmos, where he penned the book of Revelation.
After Peter denied the Lord and repented he became a powerful man of God leading the disciples and proclaiming Jesus to be the Savior and Deliverer of mankind, bringing upon himself great persecution and eventually was crucified upside down because he said he was not worthy to die like His Lord. We would do well to take a hard look at these great men and women who seemed to have something we don't have, and that is a heart, sold out to follow Jesus, dedication to Him above all else!
"Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger you girded yourself and walked wherever you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish." "Follow Me!" John 21:18
