And those members of the body which we think to be less honorable, on these we bestow greater honor; and our un-presentable parts have greater modesty, but our presentable parts have no need. But God composed the body, having given greater honor to that part which lacks it, that there be no schism (division) in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another. I Corinthians 12:23-25
Sadly the Western church has missed out on the greater gifts because we have bestowed greater honor on those who have succeeded, have the most education, or are wealthy. I have seen some great men and women of God go totally unnoticed because they were flawed or poor, or maybe they didn't dress well, or just didn't fit the religious mold. Capitalism has had an effect on the church recognizing God given gifts and talents because we are taught from birth to get all you can, and can all you get!
Remember, Jesus said that the first would be last and the last first, meaning that those who had the greatest gifts would be elevated regardless of their worldly status or bank account. Years ago a man came to our local fellowship riding a bicycle with barely the clothes on his back, he was a quirky fellow and he had lost all of his teeth and most people just wrote him off as weird, or out of place, or even looked down on him because of his financial condition. Every word out of his mouth was about believing God and testimony after testimony of how God supplied all of his needs as he walked totally by faith, but those who didn't trust God looked down on him like he was a fool.
What the body didn't know at the time was this man was a prophet sent from God, but because no one listened, they missed what God was wanting to say to them. Because they thought God would never use such a person who didn't have a seminary degree, or a PhD in religion they ended up ignoring him and eventually he left. I befriended him and we still keep in touch today and when he speaks I listen, because every time he nails it prophetically! Seems like there was a lowly carpenter who had the same problem and a whole nation missed out on the greatest gift ever given!
And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually. I Corinthians 12:26,27
