The Fragrance Of Life And Aroma Of Death

For we are to God the fragrance of Christ among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing. To the one we are the aroma of death leading to death, and to the other the aroma of life leading to life. II Corinthians 2:15,16

The other morning while walking my daily three mile course of praying and meditating with God I passed some honeysuckle blooming besides the road. Honeysuckle is one of my favorite fragrances along with magnolia and roses and their aromas are almost intoxicating.

The road I walk is where I grew up and I pass by our old homestead situated by the lake which burned years ago and I have many wonderful memories there. Sometimes the many different fragrances along the way bring back memories of things past, both good and bad. One aroma that stands out among the rest is the smell of death and along the road there are dead animals and fish that have washed up on the bank. The fragrance of life and the aroma of death are very distinguishable.

You cannot mistake life and death they are as day and night, life carries a fragrance and death has an unmistakable stench of decay. So it is with believers and unbelievers, there is a very distinct aroma with them both, the one of life and the other of death. The only way to obtain the fragrance of life is to receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith into your heart and surrender your mind, will and emotions to Him to lead you in all things.

THE FRAGRANCE OF LIFE

You have ravished my heart, My sister, My spouse; you have ravished My heart, with one look of your eyes, with one link of your necklace. How fair is your love My sister My spouse! How much better than wine is your love, and the fragrance of your perfumes than all spices! Song of Solomon 4:9,10

In the scripture from the Song of Solomon it describes the way Jesus feels for His bride with a deep and ravishing love and is drawn to her by her fragrance and the aroma of a sacrificial life. The scent of our lives ascends into the very portals of Heaven giving off a sweet fragrant smell that attracts the Lord Jesus, our husband.

Have you ever met someone that you just love to be around and you are drawn to them by what in actuality is the Spirit of God within them. They simply smell like God and their whole demeanor exudes the Lord Jesus Christ. Sadly I have only met a few on my spiritual journey like that, but the ones I have encountered were a special treasure to behold. There is a vast difference in one who has the fragrance of Christ and one who stinks of religion!

Jesus would have been one of those who carried the sweet aroma of life giving off a fragrance that was hard to resist. Thousands were drawn to Him by His love and mercy as the words of life flowed from His lips, speaking of healing, deliverance and the abundant life He promised to anyone who dared to follow Him.

A garden enclosed is My sister, My spouse, a spring shut up, a fountain sealed. Your plants are an orchard of pomegranates with pleasant fruits, fragrant henna with spikenard, spikenard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense, myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices, a fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon. Song of Solomon 4:12-15

THE SMELL OF DEATH SURROUNDS YOU

Angel of darkness is upon you, stuck a needle in your arm, so take another toke, have a blow for your nose, one more drink fool, will drown you. Oooh that smell, can't you smell that smell, oooh that smell, the smell of death surrounds you! That Smell, Lynyrd Skynrd

The smell of death and decay have an unmistakable odor and for those who are perishing their stench rises to the heavens like a dead animal lying in the sun! It surrounds the person who is lost in sin and as the scripture says,"The wages of sin is death."

Today in the world sin abounds and so with it comes the smell of death and destruction. In America the smell is often times hidden or masked by the perfumes and facades of religion trying to cover up that which is dead and lifeless. Even the altars of most churches are covered with flowers and trees to give the unsuspecting seeker something beautiful to look at rather than exposing them to the death of the Lord Jesus who is the only One who can give them life.

Millions of good people walk the earth today unaware that just beneath them, a breath away is an eternal hell full of torment and damnation ready to swallow them up forever! Deceived by religion, good works or education they believe that God, if He does exist, is pleased with them because of their goodness, but as Jesus told the rich young ruler,"No one is good but God!"

There is only one remedy that will remove the stench of death from your soul and that is the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ received by faith and repentance. The blood will wash away the smell of death and remove the sin that has condemned you to eternal death and damnation, allowing grace, mercy and forgiveness to flow through your body, soul and spirit that ultimately will give off the fragrance of life!

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. Galatians 6:7,8
